Consecutive interpreting

Consecutive interpreting - this type of interpreting is performed immediately after understanding of the thought of the speaker by the interpreter (the interpreter hears a segment of speech and then interprets it).

Consecutive interpreting requires a good memory, reaction speed, communicative dialog and background knowledge of the interpreter. In addition, the interpreter uses the note-taking and signs (so-called interpreter's notes) to ease interpretation of statements in the target language.

This type of interpreting has been used successfully employed during official high-level meetings, discussion of a range of political, economic and other Issues, in the work of congresses, symposia, performances and conferences at international level, on live television, etc. In short, it is used when simultaneous interpreting is not provided.

Sphere of application:

  • business negotiations
  • telephone and web negotiations
  • meetings and round tables
  • briefings and press conferences
  • interpreting during installation and configuration of equipment

Advantages of consecutive interpreting over other types of interpreting:

  • No need for additional hardware, which increases the mobility of the event
  • Can be done on the move, for example, when working on industrial sites, during negotiations, and when accompanying delegations
  • Participants receive additional time that may be useful to think about an issue (e.g., business negotiations)
