Recertification of the Janus Quality Management System
Wednesday, 30 April 2014 11:39

At the beginning of April 2014, recertification of the Janus QMS for compliance with ISO 9001:2008 took place. The recertification audit, just as three years ago, was completed by German company TÜV SÜD.

TUV SUD is a German expert organization. In the 150-year history of the concern, TUV SUD has become a leader in the field of inspection, testing and certification.

In 2011, its specialists confirmed the compliance of our quality management system to international standard ISO 9001:2008, and now, three years later, they have re-examined its compliance.

    The audit included verification of:
  • mechanisms for tracking customer satisfaction;
  • work with staff;
  • QMS documentation, its compliance with the standard and relevance;
  • compliance with established procedures and the presence of actual confirmation of this;
  • key aspects of production.

The auditors again analyzed the Janus QMS and familiarized themselves with alterations to it over the last year. The audit demonstrated the dynamic development of the quality management system of Janus, as well as the company itself. All new directions and methods of work of Janus were originally constructed in accordance with international standard ISO 9001:2008, which ensures the high quality of our services.

Janus specialists have successfully completed a video shoot project for Estée Lauder
Friday, 18 April 2014 01:00

In March, the multimedia department completed a project shooting a training video for Estée Lauder.

This project included the following production stages: screenplay adaptation, voiceover recording, the video shoot, arrangement and sound accompaniment. It should be noted that shooting a video lasting just 4 minutes takes an average of 5 hours of continuous work process, and requires coordinated work from all participants.

The result of the work by the multimedia department's employees and Janus received positive feedback from the customer:

"I want to thank you for the excellent, well made video.

It helped us to effectively hold the event, and to achieve our goal - to convey information to our partners and their staff in an accessible and qualitative way. Thank you to your team for their professionalism and attention to detail."

The XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games
Friday, 21 March 2014 14:32

The XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi have ended. They were attended by a record number of National Olympic and Paralympic Committees - a total of 133.

In addition to the overall triumph of the Russian team, as well as medals won by Ukraine and Kazakhstan, of special importance for us was the linguistic support for these large-scale sporting events.

Janus's Olympic history began in the summer of 2011, when our company won the tender for comprehensive linguistic support for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and became the sole vendor for the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee.

This project required the company and its employees to take original decisions and consolidate the efforts of many professionals in the field of translation, editing and layout.

The first step was the creation of a structure within Janus unique to the translation industry, a Sports Projects Department, the staff of which consisted of specialists familiar with sports terminology, including staff members who are native speakers of English, German and French.

Janus's Interpreting Department received unprecedented experience in providing interpreting services and technical support for major events in the preparation period and during the staging of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. During the preparation process, our experts provided language support for very important events, including the 126th IOC Session, the IOC Coordination Commission meetings, the audit sessions by the IOC management and seminars of the heads of Olympic and Paralympic delegations.

Moreover, qualitative linguistic support played a crucial role during visits by IOC experts in construction, power engineering, transport, overlay, accommodation, security, broadcasting and such rare spheres as the complex integration of venues, meteorology and snowmaking.

During the period of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi we simultaneously served 14 sports venues, 17 halls, 15 interpreter booths of European standard class, more than 20 tonnes of equipment and performed translations from/into 9 languages. 5 translation interpreting coordinators, 102 top class simultaneous interpreters, 11 foreign IOC interpreters, as well as 32 simultaneous, sound and video equipment service engineers worked from Janus.

During the Games, 5 project managers and more than 100 full-time and freelance translators worked on written projects. Our three coordinators, dozens of equipment engineers and approximately 100 interpreters actively worked on interpreting projects. They included such prominent experts as Bill Weber, the legendary interpreter who worked at previous Olympic Games.

Representatives of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee and the Government of the Russian Federation noted the exceptionally high quality of our services. We also received positive feedback from journalists, athletes and ordinary fans.

Big Games – Big Achievements!
Friday, 07 February 2014 14:35

The XXII Olympic Winter Games is a major international multi-sport event being held in Sochi, Russia. It will start on 7 February 2014.

A tremendous amount of work has been carried out in the run up to the Olympics, including in the field of linguistic support.

Work to provide linguistic support to the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi began in 2010.

A lot has been done throughout this period.

The company was faced with the task of choosing the most efficient way of handling orders received from the Organizing Committee. To make the work of the customer more convenient, our engineering department developed an order management and quality assessment system based on the corporate portal. This was specified by the customer as one of the advantages of working with Janus.

In order to handle the orders in real time and perform on-the-spot translation and interpretation, an implant office including four Janus employees was established at the Customer’s premises.

Janus and the Organizing Committee jointly conducted the recruitment of employees for all projects in the framework of linguistic support of the Olympic Games.

Together with terminology specialists from the Organizing Committee, Janus developed the new Sochi 2014 Russian-English terminology glossary of sports terms. The guiding principles when the material was being put together were accuracy in translation and thorough editing, including consultations with members of sports federations and, as a result, the terminology presented there was successfully used to prepare translators for work at sporting events. Besides carrying out translation and interpretation projects, Janus and the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee held a number of joint projects, which became one of the most prominent events in the industry. In 2012, Sochi hosted the second Forum "Sochi 2014: Translating the Games". It was held by the Organizing Committee of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and Janus Worldwide.

The event was attended by over 300 participants from various cities (London, Islamabad, Jakarta, Beijing, Atlanta, Barcelona, Kiev, Moscow, St Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Sochi, Khanty-Mansiysk, Chelyabinsk, etc.). During the Forum, a fairly wide range of issues relating to various aspects of translation at the Games was discussed. It covered topics such as how translation was going to be managed during the preparation and staging of the Games, the work of interpreters and translators, linguistic volunteers, etc.

And most importantly, of course, translations! The “white” Olympics in figures:

From 2010 to 2013:

Translation – 31 million words

Interpretation – 170 events

2014 (only for the period of the Olympic Games)

Translation – 4 million words

Interpretation – 700 events

This large amount of work has been carried out by our colleagues. The most important part of the work is still ahead – the ХХII Olympic Winter Games!
